The Smart Coast AI Solutions 4.0 project has successfully achieved full operational validation after three years of development and testing in real maritime and port environments. Its main results were presented at a closing event held at the headquarters of the Port Authority of Las Palmas.
Led by Qualitas Artificial Intelligence & Science (QAISC), the initiative was selected under the Ports 4.0 programme promoted by Puertos del Estado. Overall, the project focused on developing artificial intelligence technologies to improve maritime monitoring, improve port safety and support operational decision-making.
Throughout the project, QAISC developed three complementary solutions:
AIMI — AI Maritime Intelligence.
SCS — Smart Coast Surveillance.
SCS+ — Smart Coast Surveillance Plus.
Specifically, AIMI and SCS have reached Technology Readiness Level 8 (TRL 8), demonstrating their maturity in operational environments and their readiness for commercial deployment. Meanwhile, SCS+ has achieved TRL 7.
Depending on specific operational requirements, these solutions can seamlessly integrate data from optical and thermal cameras, maritime radar, LIDAR, satellite systems, or environmental models. Furthermore, artificial intelligence, edge computing, 5G connectivity and cloud services transform this information into practical tools for detection, monitoring, alert management and operational support.
The technologies were validated in several real-world locations, including the Port of Las Palmas, the Port of Gijón, the ICTS-PLOCAN test site and Barcelona.
This progress was made possible through close collaboration between the organizations involved.
PLOCAN provided access to its coastal camera network, unmanned surface vessel and maritime testing facilities.
CTIM–ULPGC contributed its expertise in computer vision, image processing and artificial intelligence.
The Port Authorities of Las Palmas and Gijón played a key role by providing operational port environments in which the technologies could be deployed, tested and validated.
The closing event brought together representatives from Puertos del Estado, PLOCAN, CTIM–ULPGC and the Port Authorities of Las Palmas, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Gijón. The session was opened by Andrés Alonso-Martirena, Director of QAISC and coordinator of the project, together with Carlos Barrera, Head of the Marine Autonomous Vehicles Area at PLOCAN.
In conclusio, the completion of Smart Coast AI Solutions 4.0 represents an important step towards bringing advanced artificial intelligence technologies out of the research environment and into real maritime and port operations.
