QAISC strengthens its position in AI-powered coastal intelligence at MARTECH 2025

On 29 May 2025, QAISC participated in MARTECH 2025, an international conference on marine and maritime technology held in Pasaia (Gipuzkoa, Spain), which brought together leading experts in robotics, sensing systems, and AI applied to ocean environments.

As part of its commitment to applied research in coastal monitoring, QAISC presented results developed in collaboration with the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), under research contract C2024/54 signed with the Canarian Science and Technology Park Foundation and supported by the Vicepresidencia Primera of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria through the project referenced in resolution “DETECCIÓN PRECISA IA.”

As a result of this collaboration, the paper “Advanced AI Strategies for Coastal Analysis: A Case Study at Las Canteras Beach in Gran Canaria” was presented at the conference by Fernando Sanfiel Reyes, a ULPGC researcher and QAISC collaborator. The work, co-authored by researchers from QAISC and members of the University Institute of Cybernetics, Business and Society from the ULPGC, was included in the official proceedings (pp. 19–20).

The study introduces a novel method for coastal zone monitoring that combines static optical sensors with deep learning models to interpret shoreline dynamics in real time, without requiring human supervision or in-situ equipment. This approach has been successfully tested in Las Canteras Beach, a complex and ecologically sensitive urban coastline. It provides a scalable, low-maintenance solution for continuous environmental monitoring—offering valuable insights for coastal managers and institutions.

The research is part of QAISC’s strategic programme Smart Coast AI Lab and contributes directly to the project SMART COAST AI SOLUTIONS 4.0. These initiatives aim to deliver real-world, sensor-integrated AI systems to strengthen environmental resilience and optimise marine space management.

The work presented at MARTECH 2025 consolidates QAISC’s role as a technological partner for next-generation coastal monitoring and supports the roadmap toward the deployment of pilot programmes in collaboration with public and private stakeholders.

We thank the MARTECH 2025 organisers and AZTI for promoting applied innovation in the Blue Economy and providing a valuable platform to share progress in intelligent maritime systems.
