QAISC and PLOCAN joint disruptive project initiative “Smart Coast AI Solutions 4.0” has received a pre-commercial project grant award from PORTS4.0 equity fund which is the corporate open innovation model adopted by the Spanish State Port Authorities to attack, support and facilitate the application of talent and entrepreneurship to the Spanish ports sector to foster its transition towards a highly efficient and productive digital economy.
Together with the Port of Las Palmas and the Port of Gijón, the project partners will be working to develop a series of new solutions that want to be relevant for the enhancement of port maritime safety and security as well as logistic efficiency, with special focus in the new requirements that may arise connected with the arrival of the autonomous vessel in a future. New digital observation technologies (optical cameras, thermal cameras, radars, lidars, sonars, AIS receivers, satellite information, etc.) integrated with data and models, edge and cloud processing, computer vision, deep learning, neural networks, digital security and decision support systems are core in the design of the response to the upcoming challenge.
Among the technological developments that the project will create a first product will work on a new real-time measurement of the maritime visibility range, on a dynamic wave break monitoring capability and on an enhanced maritime infrastructure and navigation surveillance system with the capability to detect and track vessels (separating categories, analysing its spatial and temporal position, etc.).
The project objective: “At QAISC we develop solutions that integrate digital technologies, data and artificial intelligence towards a safer, more efficient, intelligent management of a smart coastal space offering high accuracy and reliability in all environmental conditions. Priorities and tasks are set in understanding with our customers/stakeholders. Their success and improvements over time represent our largest achievement.”.
3/04/2024 Project partners and port authorities held a formal launch event of the project at PLOCAN facility in Taliarte. Project objectives and advances of each of the four targeted products was thoroughly analysed. With large enthusiasm participants discussed possible application cases of the innovative “AI Coastal Dynamics Solution”. But the part of the session which generated the largest discussion and interest was connected to the analysis of the “Smart Coast Surveillance” product to respond to Las Palmas and Gijon port present requirements.
As part of the workshop a detail engineering visit to Taliarte lighthouse was done. This is the place where the development of a new compact solution integrating real-time measurements provided by maritime radar, AIS, optical camera, thermal camera, models, navigation cards and its fusion at the edge are foreseen.
AI MARITIME VISIBILITY solution, an advanced AI (artificial intelligence) system that improves safety and efficiency in port and maritime environments through the precise measurement of directional atmospheric visibility. This pioneering product combines artificial intelligence technologies, an optical sensor and an AIS (Automatic Identification System) receiver to offer port authorities and maritime traffic managers an essential tool for managing port approach operations and remote-controlled navigation.
